Open Class

Somebody out there in Plymouth County has the recipe for the grand champion baked treat.  Someone has the grand champion photo waiting to be printed, and a youth contestant has the gifted ability to make the champion craft.  Is that somebody you?  You bet it is!

It’s time to make plans to enter one of the open class competitions at the fair.  No; it’s not too late!  There are still a dozen open class events you can be a part of.

Does your child dance, sing, play an instrument🎵.  Juggle?  Or is he a magician 🪄?  Does she have a stellar standup comedy act?

Here’s the one for them: Bill Riley Talent Search.  It’s held in the air-conditioned comfort of Century Hall on Sunday.  There is no entry fee, but there are 💰awards and the winners advance to the Iowa State Fair!   Any talent is welcome. These kids are so fun to watch!  Ages 2-21 are eligible.

Raise animals or have a pet?  Here are open class shows that were made for you.

Lil Britches Open Pet Show

Highway 3 Cattle Battle

Open Draft Horse & Mule Show

Open Fun Day Horse Show

Lil Britches Bucket Calf Show

Jackpot Barrel Bash

Another fair classic, for kids and adults alike, is the Livestock Judging Contest.  Start the Best Five Days off right with this open contest on Wednesday afternoon.

And back in the open class building (that’s the one between the Pioneer Village and the 4-H & FFA Static Building), participate in these open class offerings:

Creative Hobbies & Art

Horticulture

Food & Preservation

Photography

Be on the lookout for the special recognition classes and extra prizes 🏆💰 offered, thanks to great sponsors.

We are going to wrap up this stellar lineup of open class contests with the Antiques and Collectibles.

This is a really fun one too, that will have you taking something from your mantel and digging in the back of your storage room for the perfect treasure.

This year, the classes are America’s 250th Birthday, Plymouth County Fair, Kitchen, Toys, Tools, and Furniture.   You’ve got something that will fit in one or those categories.  Probably more than one; which is good. Because you can enter in more than one class!

Here’s a little secret not everyone knows yet: the Fair Board has been working hard to make things a little cooler in the world of open class exhibits.

Look for the Antiques and Collectibles in the Depot Building.  This move puts them in the Pioneer Village – kinda fitting, right?

Thanks to a paint grant from Paint Iowa Beautiful, presented by Diamond Vogel, the hard work of the Stanton Lucky Clovers 4-H club, and some sharp new doors, the Depot is dressed for company.  The move also gives them an air conditioner.  Make sure you check it out!  Open daily throughout the fair.

The Open Class Building is tougher to air-condition because of how it is constructed, but we are working to relieve the heat with a new system this year.

There is something new happening in the Open Class Department this year, and we couldn’t be more excited!  Stay tuned!

Okay – it’s time to quit reading and get to working on your Open Class entries!  For all you old 4-Hers: no writeups or display boxes required. IYKYK

We will see your open class entries July 29-Aug. 2 @ The Best Five Days of Summer! 🖐
